Strengthen Your Food Safety Culture

We use tailored 360 degree assessments to evaluate the way food safety is managed within your business. You’ll receive deep insight into the ‘what, how and why’ to explain the safety attitudes, beliefs and behaviours of people at all levels. We’ll identify the strengths and weaknesses of your existing culture. And we’ll work with you and your leadership team to create a comprehensive action plan for improvement. Sites will be scored so that you can benchmark and monitor progress over time, between departments and, if required, compare improvement between sites. You’ll receive full support to implement a plan to drive behaviour change.

We offer a variety of ways to support your business to improve and maintain a 5 star food hygiene rating. An Environmental Health Officer (EHO) will have calculated the overall score of your premises using guidance. Your rating will be based on your combined score from 3 elements:

  • Hygiene Practices - the way food is handled, prepared, cooked, cooled, reheated, stored and what measures are taken to prevent food being contaminated
  • Structure - the level of compliance with structural requirements laid down in regulations
  • Confidence in Management - How your business records and manages what it does to ensure food is safe for consumers using a Food Management System

By examining your last EHO report we can identify and discuss with you a support package tailored to your needs. You may need help with improving the knowledge and practice side of your business (e.g. the way that your food handlers think and behave). Or you may be stuck with the documentation side of food safety. By law all food businesses must have in place a documented Food Safety Management System. There are some free versions available which you may choose to use, depending on your business type. We can coach you on how to complete the documentation. Alternatively, we have our own Food Safety Management System which we can fit to your business. This will save you tons of time. You can also feel  confident that an expert has prepared your Hazard Analysis on your behalf. Alternatively, you might need help in a specific area e.g. to develop an Allergen Management policy and a comprehensive system to ensure allergen management is implemented effectively. You’ll be provided with as much support as you need to drive improvement forwards. We’ll ensure that your business is able to achieve and sustain an excellent food hygiene rating across one or more sites.

Peter Senge in his book ‘The Fifth Disciple” describes a learning organisation as a place ”where people continually expand their capacity to create the results they truly desire, where patterns of new thinking are nurtured…where people continually learn how to learn”. Sounds idyllic doesn’t it? It’s a vision of what might be possible. But it cannot be brought about simply by sending staff on a training course or by installing a Food Safety Management System or certification scheme. Instead we need to create the conditions that support problem solving, curiosity, risk taking, acceptance of failure and inclusion of reflection into daily practices. We need to develop an environment where people feel safe to speak out, voice concerns and challenge assumptions. A community of practice where knowledge is not hoarded. These conditions are like pieces of a puzzle. Without all the pieces, learning within your organisation is unlikely to be effective. People will kick back as change requires seeing the world in a new light. They will be expected to develop new habits, behaviours and thinking patterns without consideration of barriers in their way. You can train your staff until you are blue in the face, but without learning, change will be limited. Money will be wasted….surface change will not be sustainable.
