What Is Required By Law For Food Safety Training❓

UK food law requires all food handlers to be trained to a suitable level appropriate to their role. That doesn’t necessarily mean a formal course, but you must prove your team’s competence.

Formal, accredited food certificates (either in person or online) are the most common method to prove competence to EHOs and food safety inspectors.

Food Safety Training - A Legal Duty in the UK

What Is The Problem With Online Food Safety Courses❓

Food safety training is a core frontline defence in your business.
It's too important to be treated as a tick-box exercise.

Online food safety training in the UK is growing rapidly. But because digital courses are not regulated, it is easy to buy poor-quality training that looks good on paper but delivers very little in practice.

That can be a false economy.

Because if staff complete a course but cannot apply what they have learnt confidently back in your workplace, the training has failed where it matters most.

A certificate may be issued. But if people are still unclear, still guessing, or still falling back on old habits and shortcuts, your money has not been well spent.

And of course, that gap can create unnecessary risk.

Food safety training should do more than tick a compliance box. It should help staff understand what good food safety practice looks like in real life, so they can carry it into their role with confidence.

That is why the cheapest option is not always the most cost-effective.

How Is Classroom-Based Food Safety Training Better❓

Effective food safety training is about more than gaining a recognised certificate.

It is about helping staff understand what safe practice looks like, apply the knowledge confidently, and avoid the shortcuts and workarounds that can put your establishment at risk.

That is why at Infinitas, we deliver our Level 2 Food Safety training face to face.

In a classroom setting, staff can ask questions when they are unsure, get clarity in real time, and build a better understanding of why food safety procedures matter.

It also allows the trainer to spot confusion, support learners who are struggling, and make the training more relevant to the realities of the workplace.

Our courses are led by experienced trainers who are former Environmental Health Officers. That means we do not just teach the syllabus. We bring practical knowledge of legal compliance, common problem areas, and the behaviours that often lead people to drift away from safe procedures under pressure.

We also use interactive visual exercises throughout the training to make invisible food safety risks easier to understand and remember.

So while many providers focus on course completion, we focus on something more valuable: helping staff take what they have learnt and use it properly back in the workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions About Food Safety Level 2 Training ❓

Yes, the terms Level 2 Food Safety and Basic Food Hygiene are often used interchangeably to describe the same level of training for staff who handle open food. “Basic Food Hygiene” is the older everyday term that many people still use, while “Level 2 Food Safety” is the more formal course title commonly used by training providers and awarding bodies. Both refer to the CIEH foundation level of training expected for food handlers working with open food.

Yes. By law, food business operators must make sure food handlers are supervised, instructed and/or trained in food hygiene in a way that is appropriate to the work they do. In the UK, the law does not say every food handler must hold a food hygiene certificate, but staff who handle open food should receive training to Level 2 Food Safety standard because this is the level that matches their day-to-day food handling duties. Staff whose role is limited to serving pre-packed food or drinks, such as some bar staff or front-of-house serving staff, may be able to justify Level 1 food hygiene training where they do not handle open food. The key point is that the training must be suitable for the tasks carried out.

There is no fixed legal rule saying food safety training must be renewed every three years, but this is widely recommended as good practice. In most food businesses, staff should refresh their training at least every 3 years, and sooner if their role changes, new processes are introduced, or there are gaps in knowledge or poor practices identified. CIEH describes its Level 2 course as suitable for those wishing to refresh previously learned skills and knowledge, and local authority guidance commonly recommends refresher training at least every three years.

Yes. We can tailor the training to suit your type of food business at no extra cost. Before the course, we will arrange a call to discuss your business, ask a few questions about your food operations, and make sure the training is relevant to the work your team actually carries out. To discuss your training needs, call us on 02920 026 566 or email [email protected]

Yes. On successful completion of the course and a 30–40 minute multiple-choice exam, your business will be issued with certificates for all participants who successfully pass.

Yes. We provide face-to-face food safety training at your premises, so your team can learn in a familiar working environment without the need to travel off-site. This makes it easier to train groups of staff together and allows the course to be tailored to your type of food business and the way your team actually works.
